Half Dollars
Minted from 1870 to 1878

Of the four smaller denomination silver coins produced at the Carson City Mint, the half dollar showed the highest output in terms of face value. Yet in terms of quantities minted, half dollar production amounted to approximately one fourth that of dime production and one half that of quarter production (twenty-cent pieces are another story).

The 1870-CC is the most coveted date in a set of “CC” half dollars. Other key dates are the 1871-CC, the 1872-CC, the 1873-CC Without Arrows, the 1874-CC, and the 1878-CC. As a type coin example, the 1873-CC With Arrows half dollar, is a popular variety.

The 1875-CC is an undervalued date, which features numerous varieties. The 1876-CC and 1877-CC dates, with their higher mintage totals, are reflective of the Comstock’s peak years of production.
