THE TRADE DOLLAR series is one of the most enigmatic series in U.S. numismatics. Scorned by most merchants and misunderstood by most citizens, Trade dollars seemed destined for failure almost from the start.

Nevertheless, they provided the Carson Mint much needed work during its early years of operation. The 1878-CC Trade dollar, with only 97,000 minted, of which 44,000 or more were melted before being released, is the key date in the series. The first-year issue 1873-CC Trade dollar, though more available than its low mintage figure would suggest, is still very desirable.

The 1875-CC is the most available date in the “CC” Trade dollar series, followed closely by the 1874-CC. The 1876-CC is much scarcer than most collectors realize and offers a very special variety in the Doubled Die Reverse. The 1877-CC, though more plentiful in Mint State than might be expected, can easily qualify for the underrated category.
