A most important and historic 1876-CC twenty cent piece was auctioned off at the Bowers and Merena auction of June 11 and 12, 2009 in Baltimore. The intriguing part of this coin's history is the fact that it's entire pedigree can be traced back for five generations. 1. John Seagraves Pick, a resident of Virginia City, NV, originally obtained the coin from general circulation. probably on a whim, he decided to save it...perhaps as a keepsake from our nation's centennial year celebrations. 2. John's son, John William Pick, born in 1872 in Virginia City inherited the coin from his father then moved to Berkeley California. 3. His daughter, Virginia Pick Jurgensen born in 1904 inherited the coin. She survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 at the age of two. She held the coin through two world wars and all the long years until her death in 1993. 4. Her son, Wilfred Pick Jurgensen born 1934 in Berkeley CA. inherited the coin and kept it until he died. 5. The coin then passed to his widow and son, Jean Lorraine and Steven Frederick Jurgensen. Finally, this fascinating journey has brought us to June of 2009 where it was acquired at the B&M/Baltimore auction for 207K. You can read more about this coin and it's incredible journey through time by logging on to the Bowers and Merena website. www.bowersandmerena.com
