Hi Loosechange

Thank you for your nice words regarding my 1872-CC $5 (NGC VF-20).

I believe it to be a very nice specimen for its grade. From the original mintage of 16,980 about 100 to 125 survive today* (figures courtesy of The Mint on Carson Street by Rusty Goe).

Aproximately 50 to 75 surviving 1872-CC half eagles are in grades similar to mine.

This date is the rarest high grade "CC" half eagle with the two finest known examples grading AU-58. As of today's date, none have been certified in the MS grades (at least by the two major third-party grading companies).

This is one of the true rarities in the "CC" gold series (all denominations) and is scarce in any grade. I consider myself very lucky to have this example.

There are two known Douglas Winter Varieties: 1-A and 1-B (Var. 1-A is the rarer)...mine is a Var. 1-B example (lower MM - letters even at the base)
